How to Start a Blog for Entrepreneurs

Are you interested in starting a blog? Don’t know where to start? Well, I am glad you landed here.

I have been blogging and building websites since 2010. In that time, I have launched several blogs of my own and helped hundreds of new bloggers do the same.

Before you get started, what is a blog?

The definition of a blog has changed over the years. Today, a blog is a website centered around a specific topic or idea.

Why Would I Setup a Blog?

  • Share your story
  • Build Community
  • Knowledge Share
  • Promote yourself or business

What are the requirements?

You do not need to be a great writer to start a blog. In popular culture, readers look to bloggers for their personal perspective on specific topics and they often write from a very personal perspective – readers look to bloggers as the subject matter expert.

The only thing blogging requires is passion. It’s important that you identify and blog on a topic that you are passionate about and it may be difficult to sustain a blog if you are not truly passionate about the subject matter.

Is blogging expensive?

Blogging can be free and in some cases, it can have some cost associated with it. If you are looking to test the water, practice your writing skills, then certainly setup shop on a free platform. If you want to be a serious blogger and make money blogging, self-publishing is a better option.

At a high-level, if you decide to go the self-publishing route, below is an example of what you can expect to pay. Note this is dependent on the service provider.

  • Domain Name ~ $10/year
  • Hosting ~ $60 per year
  • Premium Theme (Optional) ~ $25 to $80 (One time)

Can I Make Money?

Blogging can be very lucrative if done correctly. The top bloggers and influencers in the space have collected lots of coins once they have made a name for themselves. It’s a great form of passive income.

Let’s Get Started

Starting a blog can seem very daunting and overwhelming. Below are basic steps you can take to get your blog off the ground.

  1. Pick a name and decide what to blog about

Choosing a blog name and topic is the most important part of blogging. Whether you have a hobby, a passion or business you would like to promote, or life experiences you’d like to share, it is important that you define what that looks like upfront.

  1. Secure your name on the web

To publish a blog, you will need to purchase a domain name, blogging software and a hosting platform. I use godaddy.com

What is a domain name?

A domain name is the address of your website that people type in the browser URL bar to visit your website. Example: 3pmteatime.com

What is a hosting?

A web host, or web hosting service provider, is a business that provides the technologies and services needed for the website or webpage to be viewed on the Internet.

Think of a domain and hosting as an address to a location.

  1. Choose a blogging platform

Before you select a blog platform, you will need to define your intent. If you are just looking for a space to express your thoughts a free platform may be right for you. If you intend to have commercial intent, then a paid platform would be your best option.

If you want to go the free route, blog platforms like WordPress, Blogger, Medium, and Blavity allow you to adopt or choose a template, customizes it and start blogging.

4. Launch your blog

At this point, you might feel overwhelmed. That’s normal. I highly recommend you craft 2-3 blog pot before going live. Once you publish, rinse & repeat. You can determine how often you will blog. Once you get in the habit, it will come naturally.

I am so excited for you. Take it one step at a time. If you encounter something unexpected during the process feel free to send me a note at alicia@baarmedia.com, always happy to help
