Confession! I love food. All kinds: from Caribbean food to New England seafood to new dishes from family-owned restaurants. And living in New York, one can go from hitting up the latest local spot now and then to dining out every night.
I will say, I have cut back on dining out and have spent more time scouring the aisles of Trader Joes. I’ve also been on a budget and have been tight about spending my discretionary income on eating out. If you looked at my bank statement you’d think I invest my coins in three things: Home Goods, Uber and dining out.
However, today was just one of those days where I did not feel like cooking. We’ve all had those— the ones when you get home after a cold day, and the last thing you want to do is cook dinner. You literally would prefer someone make the food, chew and digest it for you. After noticing my Easter leftovers were just about done, I randomly decided to visit the Village Raw Bar in Rockville Centre (VRB).
Why the Village Raw Bar? Simple, I love seafood, and everyone in my circle has been raving about it for the last few weeks. In classic Alicia fashion, I jumped at the first opportunity to check it out.
The Village Raw Bar opened right around the new year in Rockville Centre, NY. The concept is quite charming compared to the restaurant that was previously there. The black-owned restaurant resembles the classic beachfront seafood spot in Martha’s Vineyard; only on the main street in RVC. Although I am from the Caribbean and have had my fair share of seafood, there is something about the seafood from the Cape Cod Islands — VRB brought that same dining experience to Long Island.
When I walked in, I was greeted by big smiles, the smell of fresh seafood and breathtaking beachscapes that lined the cream walls surrounding the beautiful wooden bar. It brought me back to my annual summer vacation in MV.
The restaurant was inspired by the owner L.J. Sealey’s family owned raw bar in Cape Cod and their Bajan lineage. The fresh seafood fare included oysters, lobster rolls, fish and chips and New England clam chowder. I started with the baked clams. The clams were plentiful and based in a warm cream based sauce with bread on the side.
I ordered the Montauk; Fresh Shrimp, Bacon and Remoulade on a toasted bun with lettuce and tomato — the sandwich was fresh, flavorful and filling – just what I needed. And, of course, I ordered the coleslaw to complete my entrée. The owner also recommended the Apple Cider Hot Toddy in response to my love for everything tea. It was infused with rum and hints of cinnamon – it was the perfect nightcap for a cold spring night (still don’t understand why its cold in April, btw).
While I limit how much I spend on eating out, I felt VRB dishes were reasonably priced – especially for fresh seafood. I did not have insight on the Fish of the day as they are priced based on market price, but I’m sure it’s worth it.
