“Believe it or not, a lot of my business comes from minorities” says Jamel Williams, interior designer and founder of To Be Designed – A contemporary interior design studio focused on affordable, renovation, redesign, furniture with interest in bathrooms and kitchens.
You would never think that the average middle-class American (especially people of color) hire interior designers – this was great news to us. Jamel suggests most of his business comes from minority residents and reassured us that it is possible to hire a professional, get creative and design a home that still looks high-end despite a small (or non-existent) budget.
Jamel R. Williams founded To Be Designed in September of 2017 shortly after graduating from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY with a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Partt is known as Brooklyn’s epicenter of design and culture. Before attending Pratt, Jamel spent two years as a pre-med student and ultimately obtained an undergrad degree in Anthropology – his interest in people, cultures, and ways of life fuels his passion to approach design with a multidisciplinary perspective.
” I always loved design as a child. I would reimagine different spaces instead of doing the things a typical child would be doing; playing sports or video games with the other children or watching TV.”
His delicate persona, fortified drive, and a keen eye for detail provides the perfect foundation for every project he takes on, creating beautiful, and functional spaces in collaboration with his clients.
